The 4-CD deluxe set contains all recordings in chronological order, including studio recordings by the Fabulous Thunderbirds from the time when Jimmie Vaughan and Kim Wilson were still members of the band.
It begins with thirteen previously unreleased tracks from sessions they recorded in 1978 for a potential album (produced by Doc Pomus) that was never released, but is now available in stores for the first time. The five-hour compilation then traces their career through all subsequent releases on Takoma, Chrysalis, and Epic until Jimmie left the band in 1989 to pursue a solo career—a total of eight albums: The Doc Pomus Sessions 1978; The Fabulous Thunderbirds (Girls Go Wild); What's The Word?; Butt Rockin'; T-Bird Rhythm; Tuff Enuff; Hot Number; Powerful Stuff.

The Fabulous Thunderbirds
Austin entwickelte sich in den 1970er-Jahren zu einem Mekka des Texas-Blues. Stevie Ray Vaughan war ein Hauptfaktor dafür, aber mindestens ebenso wichtig waren die Fabulous Thunderbirds mit Stevies älterem Bruder Jimmie Vaughan an der Gitarre und dem Bluesharpspieler und Sänger Kim Wilson. In ihren frühen Jahren waren die T-Birds Puristen: Sie konzentrierten sich auf den Sound alter Excello-Singles und anderer Bluesjuwelen, die nur wirklich ernsthafte Liebhaber der Musik kannten, oder schrieben eigenes Material im vergleichbar klassischen Stil.
Wilson wurde am 6. Januar 1951 in Detroit geboren, er wuchs in Goleta, Kalifornien, auf und begann mit 17 wegen seiner Begeisterung für George 'Harmonica' Smith, Lazy Lester, Little Walter und James Cotton, ebenfalls Mundharmonika zu spielen. Wilson landete irgendwann in Austin, wo er Vaughan (geboren in Dallas am 20. März 1951) traf und mit ihm sowie dem Bassisten Keith Ferguson und Drummer Mike Buck 1974 die T-Birds gründete. 'Girls Go Wild', ihre erste Takoma/Chrysalis-LP von 1979 und die Folgeplatte 'What's The Word?' von 1980 bestanden zum größten Teil aus äußerst atmosphärischem, gefühlvollem und dennoch kraftvollem Southern Blues, geprägt von Vaughans ungewöhnlich knackigem, knappem Gitarrenspiel und Wilsons virtuosen Bluesharpeinsätzen mit fettem Sound. Fran Christina ersetzte Buck 1980 am Schlagzeug, und die T-Birds blieben 1981 auf 'Butt Rockin'' sowie ein Jahr später mit 'T-Bird Rhythm' ihrem Stil treu, bevor sie eine vierjährige Studio-Auszeit nahmen, während der Preston Hubbard für Ferguson als Bassist einstieg.
Als das Quartett 1986 wieder ins Studio ging, war es bei der großen Plattenfirma CBS Associated. Mit Dave Edmunds als Produzent kamen in ihrer Musik Rock- und Souleinflüsse wesentlich stärker zur Geltung, obwohl der Blues nach wie vor ihr Fundament bildete. Tuff Enuff, der fetzige Titelsong dieser ersten LP für CBS, stammte aus Wilsons Feder katapultierte die T-Birds im Frühling des Jahres direkt in die Stratosphäre bis auf Platz 10 der Pop-Singlecharts (das Album wurde mit Platin ausgezeichnet und kam auf Platz 13). Von derselben LP stammte auch ihr nächster Hit, eine Neuaufnahme von Sam & Daves pulsierendem Wrap It Up.
Vaughan verließ die T-Birds 1989, um mit seinem Bruder Stevie Ray zusammenzuarbeiten, aber kurz nach Veröffentlichung ihrer gemeinsamen 'Family Style'-LP starb Stevie 1990 bei einem Hubschrauberabsturz. Seitdem verfolgt Jimmie Vaughan seine Solokarriere. Wilson hat die T-Birds mit einer Reihe von hervorragenden Gitarristen am Leben erhalten, darunter Duke Robillard, Kid Bangham, Kid Ramos, Nick Curran, Kirk Fletcher und Jon Moeller, sowie mit verschiedenen Rhythmusgruppen.
