Champion Jack Dupree got his name from his time as a boxer, but one day decided to turn many of his larger than life stories into songs. He joined forces with Atlantic Records and recorded his first and most famous album, "Blues From The Gutter", realized in New York in 1958 with a band that included saxophonist Pete Brown and guitarist Larry Dale. Supervised by producer Jerry Wexler, the album features Dupree's playful Delta blues in both self-penned tracks and cover versions of traditional tunes, such as "Goin' Down Slow" by James Burke Oden. "Blues From The Gutter" became a major influence on artists like Jerry Lee Lewis and Brian Jones (Rolling Stones) over the years.
