The Butterfield Blues Band was founded in 1963 by blues harmonica player and singer Paul Butterfield.
Their classic album East-West, released in 1966, offers an outstanding combination of psychedelic rock and traditional blues music.

At that time the super group consisted of guitar hero Mike Bloomfield, keyboardist Mark Naftalin, bassist Jerome Arnold, drummer Billy Davenport and of course the master Paul Butterfield himself. The authentic blues sounds are cleverly interwoven with sounds of jazz and reggae music. On East-West, each of the talented musicians can be heard as an individual, with the interaction resulting in a perfect overall work.

The album turned out to be one of the essential masterpieces of the Blues-Rock movement of the 60s. Paul Butterfield died in 1987 at the age of 44 and continued recording new songs until shortly before his death. He was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2006 and again as a member of his own Butterfield Blues Band in 2015.

In den frühen 1960er Jahren wagten sich junge Blues-Fans und Teenager wie Charlie Musselwhite, Michael Bloomfield und Paul Butterfield in die Blues-Clubs auf der South Side Chicagos, um Auftritte der Begründer des elektrischen Chicagoer Nachkriegs-Blues wie Otis Rush, Little Walter, Buddy Guy, Magic Sam, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, u.a. live auf der Bühne zu erleben. Schließlich fanden sie selbst ihren Weg auf die Bühne und jammten mit den schwarzen Bluesmännern, von denen sie begierig eine Menge lernen wollten.

Bevor er 1963 die Butterfield Blues Band gründete, spielte Paul Butterfield (Mundharmonika, Gesang) mit dem Mitschüler der University of Chicago, Elvin Bishop, in Bar-Bands namens Salt and Pepper Shakers oder dem South Side Olympic Blues Team. Die ursprüngliche Besetzung der Paul Butterfield Blues Band bestand u.a. aus zwei ehemaligen Mitgliedern von Howlin' Wolf's Band, Jerome Arnold (Bass) und Sam Lay (Schlagzeug), später kamen Bishop (Gitarre), Mark Naftalin (Klavier, Orgel) und Lead-Gitarrist Mike Bloomfield hinzu. Die Gruppe baute eine starke lokale Fangemeinde auf; ihr Debütalbum erschien 1965. Im selben Jahr unterstützte die Butterfield-Band Bob Dylan auf dem Newport Folk Festival bei dessen umstrittenen ersten ‚elektrischen’ Auftritt.

Während das selbstbetitelte Debüt von 1965 Hardcore-Blues im Chicago-Stil mit mehreren Eigenkompositionen enthielt, ging das Nachfolgealbum von 1967, ‚East-West', in eine ganz andere Richtung. Seine langen improvisatorischen Jams, insbesondere der Raga-gefärbte Titelsong, zeigten mehr Ravi Shankar und John Coltrane als Muddy Waters.

Kurz nach der Veröffentlichung von ‚East-West’ löste sich die ursprüngliche Butterfield Blues Band auf. Bloomfield gründete The Electric Flag zusammen mit seinem Seelenverwandten Nick Gravenites und nahm in Zusammenarbeit mit Al Kooper ‚Super Session’, eine der erfolgreichsten Langspielplatten der Rock-Geschichte, auf.

Die nun als Paul Butterfield Blues Band bekannte Band nahm bis 1971 weiterhin für Elektra Records auf. Butterfield fügte eine Bläsergruppe hinzu (darunter David Sanborn am Altsaxophon) und änderte seine musikalische Grundausrichtung von Blues zu horngetriebenem R&B und Soulmusik mit bluesigem Touch. Als Sideman spielte er auf Muddy Waters' 1969er Album ‚Fathers and Sons’ und zog nach der Auflösung seiner Blues Band 1972 nach Woodstock, New York. Dort gründete er Butterfield's Better Days mit Amos Garrett, Geoff Muldaur und Ronnie Barron.

1976 trat Butterfield bei The Band's ‚Last Waltz’-Konzert auf. Er tourte weiter mit Levon Helms RCO All Stars und mit ex-Band-Bassist Rick Danko in der Danko-Butterfield Band. Anfang 1980, während der Aufnahme zu ‚North-South’ in Memphis, wurde Butterfield ins Krankenhaus eingeliefert. Er nahm lediglich noch ein weiteres Soloalbum auf: ‚The Legendary Paul Butterfield Rides Again’, das 1986 erschien, ein Jahr bevor der 44-jährige Musiker tot in seiner Wohnung aufgefunden wurde.
