Es ist Teil der R&B-Legende, dass Sam Cooke seine Karriere als Gospel-Sänger bei Specialty Records begann und dass er im Juni 1956 an Firmenchef Art Rupe schrieb: "Ein Freund, den ich schon seit geraumer Zeit kenne, fragte mich, ob ich in Erwägung ziehen würde, einige populäre Balladen für eine der großen Plattenfirmen aufzunehmen. Ich habe ihm ja gesagt." Cookes Plan war es, Pop-Platten "unter einem anderen Namen" zu schneiden. Und ich würde weiterhin mit der Gruppe aufnehmen und singen. Ich habe mein Material bereit und alles, was ich brauche, ist ein Okay von dir." Rupes Antwort war schnell und entschieden negativ, aber er stimmte zu, dass Cooke Popmaterial pseudonym für Specialty aufnehmen durfte. Rupe hatte aus Lloyd Price, Larry Williams und Little Richard Stars gemacht und dachte, Rock'n' Roll sei so hart und unnachgiebig wie Gospel. Offensichtlich dachte Cooke das Gegenteil.

Rupe wurde wütend, als Cooke und sein Produzent, Bumps Blackwell, einen weißen Chor für eine Session anheuerten, und es wurde nur schlimmer, als Cooke mehr Geld verlangte. Rupe sagte Blackwell schließlich, dass er auf einige Boni verzichten und die Sam-Cooke-Bänder nehmen könne. Blackwell stimmte zu und ging mit You Send Me. Es war, gibt Rupe zu, die schlimmste geschäftliche Entscheidung seines Lebens, und seine einzige Möglichkeit war, ein Demoband zu nehmen, das Cooke im April 1957 aufgenommen hatte, und es am 1. November mit dem Gitarristen Rene Hall und den gleichen Backgroundsängern zu überspielen, die er auf You Send Me gehasst hatte. Gemeinsam näherten sie sich dem Klang von Cooke's neuem Hit an, und es war nur an einigen Stellen zu erkennen, dass es sich um einen zusammengebastelten Meister handelte.

Es war ein erfolgreicher Schritt, dass ich Come Running Back To You auf Platz 1 der R&B-Charts und Platz 18 der Pop-Charts erreichte, aber die schlechte Nachricht für Rupe war, dass der Boden des Fasses in Sicht war.
