Kendel Carson and songwriter/producer Chip Taylor recorded two successful albums in the late noughties, Rearview Mirror Tears (featuring I Like Trucks) and Alright Dynamite. Shortly thereafter, Taylor collaborated on a screenplay about a country singer from the 70s who, instead of signing a record deal with a major label, preferred to give away cassettes and demos of her songs.

Taylor and Carson recorded songs that were intended as the soundtrack for the movie. Kendel acted as the fictional Suzanna Hamilton and sang the supposed 70s country hits that were only known to a handful of fans. The Lost Tapes of Suzanna Hamilton Sessions were recorded at Dubway Studios in New York by John Platania (Van Morrison, guitar), Greg Leisz (pedal steel), Tony Mercadante (bass), Tony Leone (drums), Kendel (fiddle & vocals) and Chip (guitar & vocals).

Later, inspired by the Suzanna Hamilton story, Taylor and Carson developed more songs and recorded them in a small studio in Calgary, Canada called The Station. They were assisted by Canadian music guru Neil MacGonigill and musicians Russ Broom (guitar), Mike Lent (bass) and Spencer Chayne (drums).
