Burdon and the group returned in April 1968 with The Twain Shall Meet, continuing their psychedelic journey. “Monterey” chronicled the previous summer’s seminal festival while “Sky Pilot” reflected the growing anti-war sentiment as the Vietnam Conflict escalated. Steeped in a dense, layered sound full of electric guitars, sitars, strings, brass and washes of phased vocals, the album served notice that Burdon and company were totally in-step with America’s youth movement. Sky Pilot war ein 7:21 Song, der in zwei Teile geteilt werden musste, um dem 45 U/min Format gerecht zu werden. Teil Eins mit Eric Burdons Gesang und den ersten vier Versen wurde im Juni 1968, einen Monat bevor sich die Gruppe auflöste, zu einem großen Hit[#14]. Teil Zwei ist ein erweitertes Gitarrensolo, das in den Lärm der startenden Flugzeuge übergeht, eine scheinbare Parade mit Dudelsackspielern und Publikumsgeräuschen und dann die letzten beiden Strophen. Als das Lied endet, bleibt der Widerspruch, wie junge Männer sowohl'Soldaten Gottes' mit dem Schicksal ihres Landes in ihren Händen sein können, als auch dem 6.

Die britische Gruppe The Animals begann als The Alan Price Combo in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England. Neben Price, geboren am 19. April 1942, an den Keyboards, waren Eric Burdon (geboren am 11. Mai 1941) am Gesang, Bryan 'Chas' Candler (geboren am 18. Dezember 1938) am Bass und Hilton Valentine (geboren am 21. Mai 1943) an der Gitarre vertreten, und John Steel (geboren am 4. Februar 1941) am Schlagzeug[Die Gruppe, die Sky Pilot aufgenommen hat, war ohne Alan Price und John Steel aus ihrer ursprünglichen Besetzung, wobei Steel durch Barry Jenkins ersetzt wurde]. Ihre Ankunft in der Musikszene im Jahr 1964 fiel mit der von Manfred Mann, The Hollies und The Zombies zusammen, Gruppen, für die die Beatles, The Dave Clark Five, The Rolling Stones und andere bereits den Weg geebnet hatten.

The Animals' erste Veröffentlichung für MGM, ein elektrisches Cover des Folksongs The House Of The Rising Sun, wurde sofort auf Platz 1 auf beiden Seiten des Atlantiks gedreht. Für ihre nächsten fünf Veröffentlichungen überarbeiteten sie weitere Blues-Songs wie Boom Boom Boom und Bring It On Home To Me, ein Stil, der gut zu Burdons rauer Stimme passte. Dann wandten sie sich, wie viele ihrer Kollegen, an die New Yorker Brill Building-Songwriter. Es war ihre Aufnahme von Brill Stalwarts Barry Mann und Cynthia Weills Komposition We Gotta Get Out Of This Place aus dem Jahr 1965, die The Animals für immer bei Vietnam-Soldaten beliebt gemacht hat.
