Junior Brown has had his Ernest-Tubb-on-acid shtick down for over 20 years now, and somehow it still works. And why shouldn't it? The man is a world-class instrumentalist who doesn't take himself too seriously, and he has a knack for composing songs about contemporary life that sound like they were written 50 years ago. Volume 10 is a six-song EP that encapsulates his essence in a fun 20-minute package. Hang Up and Drive is the key song, a classic country song about women driving while talking on the phone. Yes, that's right, women; apparently Junior doesn't think men talking on their cell phones cause problems, only the ladies. Aside from this admittedly misogynistic aside, however, the song is fast, clever and undeniably fun - and packed with virtuoso picking. In fact, all of the songs here feature stunning guitar playing. The other four songs with lyrics aren't quite as compelling as Hang Up and Drive, but the set's sole instrumental and closing track, Almost to Tulsa, is a rousing jazzy number that highlights Brown's truly impressive instrumental skills. In short, if you like Junior, you should get this album. It's got everything you want to hear from him. And if you've never heard him before, this is as good a place to start as any of his records. - GREG ELLIS
