Für die amerikanische Rockszene hat Steve Miller dieselbe Bedeutung wie John Mayall für die englische. Beide sind auf ihre Art Vaterfiguren, durch deren Schule eine Reihe heute namhafter Musiker ging. Geboren wurde Steve Miller am 5.10. 1944 in Milwaukee (VVisconsin) als Sohn eines Arztes.

In Dallas im US-Staat Texas wuchs er auf und begann mit seinem 12. Lebensjahr Musik zu machen. Seine Lehrmeister waren Muddy Waters, T-Bone Walker und Junior Wells in Chicago. Nebenbei studierte er an verschiedenen amerikanischen und europäischen Uni-versitäten. Seine erste Gruppe gründete er 1966 als Miller Blues Band, taufte sie aber schon 1967 in Steve Miller Band um. Von Anfang an baute er seine Songs auf die Bluestradition auf, vermischte seinen Stil aber mit literarischen Einfällen und elektronischen Effekten.

Musiker wie Boz Scaggs, Lee Michaels, Paul McCartney, Nicky Hopkins, Bob Winkelman oder Jim Peterman spielten mit ihm zusammen oder gingen bei ihm in die Lehre, bevor sie mit eigenen Gruppen Karriere machten. „Children of the Future" war 1968 seine erste LP, mit Chuck Berry nahm er eine LP auf. Den größten Erfolg aber feierte er Ende 1973, Anfang 1974, als er die LP „The Joker" veröffentlichte und daraus die gleichnamige Single aus-gekoppelt wurde. Sie wurde ein Hit in der ganzen Welt, machte Steve Miller populär wie noch nie. Doch Erfolg ver-schreckt ihn nur - mißtrauisch geworden zog er sich erst einmal zurück, brachte seitdem keine eigene LP mehr heraus. In seiner Band spielten im Augenblick: Pianist Dicky Thompson, Schlagzeuger John King und Bassist Gerald Johnson.
