Ende 1971 knallte sie mit ihrem Erotik-Hit „Je t'aime' in die Hitlisten der Welt und lieferte trotz (oder gerade deswegen) zahlreicher Bannstrahlen von Funk- und Fernsehanstalten einen Dauerbrenner, dessen eindeutiges Stöhnen noch heute gern gehört wird. Dann wurde es wieder still um das Paar Birkin - Serge Gainsbourgh, bis der Côte-d'Azur-Modetanz „La décadanse' erneut für Schlagzeilen und Umsatz sorgte. Jane Birkin begann ihre Karriere als Schauspielerin mit einer Nebenrolle in dem Erfolgsstreifen „Blow Up'. In John Barrys Musical „Passion Flower Hotel' hatte sie bereits die Haupt- rolle.Dennoch verließ sie wenig später mit ihrer Tochter England, um sich in Frankreich niederzulassen. Als ihr Weg den von Serge Gainsbourgh kreuzte, zog ein neuer Doppelstern am Show-Himmel auf. Gainsbourgh wird eines der vielseitigsten Talente Frankreichs genannt.
