Big Maybelle

Big Maybelle, geboren 1926 in Jackson, Tennessee, als Mabel Smith, nahm 1944 mit Christine Chatman's Orchestra bis zu ihrem Solo-Debüt 1947 bei King Records auf. Ein großstimmiger Blues-Shouter, 1952 sah sie als'Big Maybelle' mit Okeh, und 1953 brachte sie drei R&B Top Ten-Hits, darunter'Gabbin' Blues'. Sie zog 1956 nach Savoyen und "Candy" wurde ein weiterer R&B-Hit, aber in den späten fünfziger Jahren gab es immer wieder Balladen und Jump-Blues, die keine weitere kommerzielle Wirkung zeigten. Die sechziger Jahre brachten Züge nach Braunschweig, Scepter, Rojac, Port und Chess, dann brachte eine Rückkehr nach Rojac 1966 Erfolg, als "Don't Pass Me By" und "96 Tears" R&B-Hits waren, die Maybelle ihren einzigen nationalen "Pop"-Hit bescherten. Abgesehen von einer Scheibe auf Braunschweig 1968 blieb sie bis zu ihrem Tod im Januar 1972 bei Rojac.
