Aufgewachsen in Florida in einer musikalischen Familie, der Vater spielte Fiddle und Dobro, fühlten sich die Bellamy Brüder vom Country Rock angezogen. Später war Soul das Schlagwort. Sie spielten in den Bands von Percy Sledge und Little Anthony, dann wurden sie Mitglieder in diversen Rock Bands, bis sie sich Ende der 60er Jahre selbständig machten. Nach Misserfolgen beschlossen die zwei, Studiomusiker zu werden. Während dieser Zeit entwickelten sie einen ganz bestimmten Stil und schrieben ihr eigenes Songmaterial. Sie zogen an die Westküste, wo sie einen Schallplattenvertrag unterschrieben. Eine ihrer ersten Platten ,Let Your Love Flow“ wurde ein großer Pop Hit, in den Country Charts hielt sich der Erfolg in Grenzen. Erst Ende der 70erJahre, als die Bellamy Brothers die Betonung mehr auf „Country“ legten, kamen die großen Erfolge in den Country Charts mit Hits wie ,If I Said You Have A Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me“,“Sugar Daddy“, ,Dancing Cowboys“ und ,Old Hippie“. Trotz dieser Erfolge werden die Bellamy Brothers in Nashville als die Außenseiter aus dem fernen Florida gehandelt.
