NATE GIGSON & THE STARS OF STARDAY 24 Songs With Bear Family BCD 17588 There's nothing wrong with doing yourself good! This is the motto of singer, guitarist and musicologist Nate Gibson with this production that highlights the artists of the country label Starday. An avid fan, he devoted many years of his life to gathering testimonies in order to produce the definitive book on the subject, The Starday Story: The House That Country Music Built (University Press Of Mississippi). A bit like the Texas equivalent of Sun, Starday released the debut albums of George Jones, Willie Nelson, Roger Miller, Dottie West, Sleepy Labeef, Rudy Grayzell and revitalized the careers of Red Sovine, Cow Boy Copas, Johnny Bond. Nate Gibson realized that many of these artists were still touring and in order to have fun until the end, he had the idea of having them re-recorded.
The project takes the form of respectful duets to highlight the original singers and musicians. The sessions take place in the historic Gold Star studio in Houston's naked deve-ve-nu Sugarhill Studios. On the rockabilly menu with Sleepy Labeef (" Ail The Time ", " I'm Through ") and Rudy Tutti Grayzell (" Let's Get Wild ", " Duck Tail "), Frankie Miller's country rock (" Rain Rain ") and Arnold Parker (" Find A New Woman "), bluegrass with Little Roy Lewis ("Saint's Banjo March"), road song by the irresistible Betty Amos ("Eighteen Wheels A Rolling") and all the facets of country music that Starday published, a pioneer in the field, in the form of 33 rpm during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. The support is provided by Marty Stuart, who is always ready to lend a hand with his Fabulous Superlatives group, including Kenny Vaughn and Chris Scruggs. In a copious 56-page booklet, Nate Gibson gives all the information about the artists present. Puppet designer Ken Vogel makes models of all the participants, giving the final touch to this successful project. Tony MARLOW

Fan éperdu, il consacre de nombreuses années de sa vie à recueillir des témoigna-ges afin de réaliser l'ouvrage défini-tif sur la question, The Starday Story : The House That Country Music Built (University Press Of Mississippi). Un peu l'équivalent texan de Sun, Starday sort les pre-miers disques de George Jones, Willie Nelson, Roger Miller, Dottie West, Sleepy Labeef, Rudy Grayzell et revitalise les carrières de Red Sovine, Cow Boy Copas, Johnny Bond. S'étant rendu compte que plusieurs de ces artistes tournent encore et afin de se faire plaisir jus-qu'au bout, Nate Gibson à l'idée de les faire réenregistrer.
Le projet prend la forme de duos respectueux afin de mettre en valeur les chan-teurs et musiciens originaux. Les séances ont lieu dans l'historique studio Gold Star de Houston deve-nu Sugarhill Studios. Au menu du rockabilly avec Sleepy Labeef (« Ail The Time », « I'm Through ») et Rudy Tutti Grayzell (« Let's Get Wild », « Duck Tail »), le country-rock de Frankie Miller (« Rain Rain ») et Arnold Parker (« Find A New Woman »), du bluegrass avec Little Roy Lewis (« Saint's Banjo March »), de la chanson de routier par l'irrésistible Betty Amos (« Eighteen Wheels A Rolling ») et toutes les facettes de la country que Starday a publié, pionnier en la matière, sous forme de 33 tours au cours des années 50, 60 et 70. L'accompagnement assure puisqu'il est fourni par Marty Stuart, toujours prêt à filer un coup de main pour des projets ointage, avec son grou-pe Fabulous Superlatives compre-nant Kenny Vaughn et Chris Scruggs. Dans un copieux livret de 56 pages, Nate Gibson donne tous les renseignements sur les artistes présents.
