Geboren am 17. 4.1930 in Welwyn Garden City Nachdem er zuerst Violine gespielt hatte, studierte er an der Guildhall School of Music in London Posaune und Kontrabass. 1949 gründete er seine erste Amateur-Band, schon kurze Zeit danach die Band, die seit 1954 den Namen „Chris Barber's Jazz Band' trägt und heute noch besteht. Spielte sie am Anfang vor allem Musik im New-Orleans-Stil - das große Vorbild war dabei King Oliver -, so wurde die Palette der Band im Laufe der Zeit immer farbiger. Chris Barber hatte immer ein offenes Ohr für neue Entwicklungen und alle Arten von Musik, die er dann in das Repertoire seiner Band integrierte und war oft genug selbst Wegbereiter neuer Musikrichtungen.

Es war Chris Barber, der viele amerikanische Jazzmusiker zum ersten mal zu Konzerten nach Europa holte. Barber war unter anderem der Haupt- träger der „Skiffle'-Bewegung. Die Chris Barber Jazz Band ist jedes Jahr einige Wochen in der Bundesrepublik, aber auch in allen anderen europäischen und überseeischen Ländern gastiert sie regelmäßig mit vollem Erfolg.
