Mike Zito returns to St. Louis with “Outside Or The Eastside,” his fourth solo studio album for Gulf Coast Records. It’s a deeply personal album, shaped by memories, places, and the desire for a fresh start. On the streets of his hometown, St. Louis, Zito reconnects with the sounds, stories, and hard lessons that have shaped his distinctive style of soul-driven blues and fearless storytelling. Thirteen years after “Gone To Texas,” this album feels like a turning point and marks a new chapter for Mike, his family, and a life he has reclaimed in the city where it all began.

The songs paint vivid snapshots of city life and personal self-reflection—from nocturnal remorse and self-awareness to unflinching portraits of the struggle for survival in the neighborhood and the unvarnished truth of the streets. Tracks like “Downtown at Midnight” and “Grand Avenue” capture the harshness, temptation, and consequences of the past with unflinching honesty, lending the album a profound emotional depth and lived experience. Zito’s songwriting is direct and cinematic, a blend of unflinching reflection, compassion, and hard-earned wisdom.

Mike Zito

Mike Zito (geboren am 19. November 1970) ist ein amerikanischer Gitarrist, Sänger, Produzent und Songwriter aus St. Louis, Missouri, USA. Er ist Mitbegründer der Royal Southern Brotherhood mit Cyril Neville, Devon Allman, Charlie Wooton und Yonrico Scott.
Zito begann im Alter von fünf Jahren zu singen und begann seine Karriere in der Musikszene von St. Louis. 2008 gab Zito sein internationales Debüt auf dem Label Eclecto Groove.

Die Karriere

Zito veröffentlichte Platten auf seinem eigenen Label, tourte regional und spielte einige nationale Termine bis er 2008 bei Eclecto Groove Records unterschrieb. Im selben Jahr veröffentlichte Eclecto Groove Today.
Die Musiker auf der CD waren eine Reihe von Studiomusikern, darunter der Bassist James "Hutch" Hutchinson (Bonnie Raitt, Boz Scaggs, Joe Cocker); Heartbreakers und Mudcrutch-Keyboarder Benmont Tench; Co-Produzent/Schlagzeuger Tony Braunagel (Taj Mahal, B.B. King) und Percussionist Michito Sanchez (Nelly Furtado, Steve Winwood). Auf der CD sind auch Joe Sublett (Saxophon), Darrell Leonard (Trompete), Mitch Kashmar (Mundharmonika) mit Teresa James und Ce Ce Ce Bullard (Hintergrund-Gesang) zu hören.

Pearl River und Gone To Texas

2009 veröffentlichte Eclecto Groove seine zweite CD Pearl River. Zito und Cyril Neville arbeiteten am Titelstück mit. Bei den Blues Music Awards 2010 wurde "Pearl River" als "Song des Jahres" ausgezeichnet. Pearl River wurde in New Orleans, Louisiana in den Piety Street Studios aufgenommen. Mit dabei waren Cyril Neville, Anders Osborne, Reese Wynans, Susan Cowill, Lynwood Slim und Johnny Sansone, mit der Rhythmusgruppe von Lonnie 'Popcorn' Trevino Jr. (Bass) und Eric Bolivar (Schlagzeug).
Im Jahr 2011 erfüllte Zito seinen Plattenvertrag mit Delta/Eclecto Groove mit der Veröffentlichung von Greyhound, das bei den 2011 Blues Music Awards in Memphis, Tennessee, für das "Best Rock Blues Album" nominiert wurde.
Im Jahr 2013 unterschrieb Mike Zito bei Ruf Records und veröffentlichte Gone to Texas, ein tiefes und persönliches Album, das dem Staat gewidmet ist, von dem er sagt, dass er sein Leben gerettet hat. Auf "Gone to Texas" hat Mike seine Band The Wheel mit Zito - Gitarren und Gesang, Scot Sutherland - Bass, Jimmy Carpenter - Gitarren/Saxophon und Rob Lee am Schlagzeug zusammengestellt.

Royal Southern Brotherhood

Mike Zito war von 2010 bis 2014 in der Royal Southern Brotherhood.
Zito traf Devon Allman während der Zusammenarbeit im Guitar Center in St. Louis. Die beiden würden durch Manager Rueben Williams, der Neville und Zito vor der Unterzeichnung von Allman leitete, wieder vereint werden.
Zito, Cyril Neville und Devon Allman wurden Königliche Südbruderschaft. Die drei eingeladenen Rhythmusgruppen in Charlie Wooten am Bass und Schlagzeuger Yonrico Scott machten eine kurze Tournee und die erste offizielle Show der Band fand im "Rock n' Bowl" in New Orleans statt. Ein Jahr verging, und die Supergruppe veröffentlichte ihr Debütalbum zu begeisterten Kritiken.
Mit Jim Gaines als Produzent (Carlos Santana, Stevie Ray, The Steve Miller Band) nahm Royal Southern Brotherhood das Debütalbum der Band im Dockside Recording Studio in Maurice, Louisiana, auf. Allman, Neville und Zito teilen sich den Lead-Gesang für das neue Album, wobei Zito und Allman Zwillings-Gitarren-Leads spielen, was eine Erinnerung an den verwandten Sound der Band zu den Dual-Gitarren-Leads von Allmans Onkel Duane und Dickey Betts in der Allman Brothers Band ist.
Im Mai 2014 gewann Royal Southern Brotherhood den Blues Music Award als "Beste DVD" für die Veröffentlichung der Band Ruf Records Songs from the Road- Live in Germany.
Im Juni 2014 veröffentlichten Royal Southern Brotherhood ihre zweite Studio-CD heartsoulblood auf Ruf Records. Making the Scene beschrieb die CD als "Die Kombination von Blues und Soul wie in N'awlins, das Ganze ist mehr als die Summe seiner Teile." Es wurde von Jim Gaines produziert und von David Z entwickelt. Anfang Oktober 2014 verließ Mike Zito die Royal Southern Brotherhood, um sich auf seine eigene Karriere zu konzentrieren.

Film und Fernsehen

2012 wurde Zitos "Roll On" aus dem Album Greyhound in der FX-Hitserie Sons of Anarchy vorgestellt.

Solo-Arbeit

2012 debütierte Zito mit seiner neuen Band'The Wheel'. Das Rad zeigt Scot Sutherland am Bass, Lewis Stephens am Keyboard, Schlagzeuger Rob Lee und Jimmy Carpenter am Saxophon. Im Jahr 2014 wurde Mike Zito und das Album von The Wheel, Gone To Texas, für einen Blues Music Award in der Kategorie'Rock Blues Album of the Year' nominiert.
