Who was/is Karl Wolfram ? - CDs, Vinyl LPs, DVD and more

Karl Wolfram, born in Berlin, gave concerts as early as the mid-fifties in which he was able to bring several centuries of German folk songs to life. With a repertoire of over 450 songs, Wolfram, who had studied economics before discovering his love for the Middle Ages, appeared in many countries around the world, including the United States and the then Soviet Union. 1964 saw the release of his first album: 'Wolfram singt aus 7 Jahrhunderten zur Theorbe, Elfenbein-Laute und Radleier'.

The singer and master on his various medieval instruments sang old ballads and set lyrics of bygone times to music. Like the song Wol mich der stunde by Walther von der Vogelweide and that by Heinrich Scherrer, who among other things wrote guitar accompaniments for early editions of the songbook 'Der Zupfgeigenhansl', the poem Die goldene Wiege by Hermann Löns was set to music. The Mirror' described Wolfram's appearance, who celebrated his minstrelsongs with a sonorous voice, as follows: "He looks like a faun. Forsch, with a firm kick, swaying shoulders and a flaming red beard he appears, his broad shoulders squeezed into a self-woven doublet. He only sings by candlelight. Electric air conditioners and neon tubes disturb the sound of his old instruments. Because not only his music, but also his instruments are from the past."
