Lee ‘Shot’ Williams

Born in Lexington, Mississippi in 1938, Lee went north to Chicago in the late 1950s.He began his career singing in Little Smokey Smothers’ and Magic Sam’s bands. His first record was for the small Foxy label in 1962 but he signed with the much bigger Federal Records the following year. He also sang with Earl Hooker’s band off and on throughout the 1960s. In 1966 he signed with Palos Records and then did one 45 for Gamma Records in 1968. Though he had no big hits with these labels, he worked steadily on the road and in nightclubs around Chicago. In 1969 he signed with Shamma Records and hit pay dirt withI Like Your Styleb/wI Hurt MyselfandGet Some Orderb/wOur Thing Is True. Both were strong sellers and regional hits and were recorded in Memphis at Hi studio with Willie Mitchell and Syl Johnson producing. In 1970 he did a one off 45 for Sussex Records and released a fairly successful album on the much bigger TK label produced by Ralph Bass.

Like many R&B artists of his generation, things really slowed down for him in the 1970s and 1980s. The Dutch label Black Magic Records released his comeback album ‘Cold Shot’ to great critical acclaim in 1995. By this time he had relocated to Memphis and soon signed with Ecko Records there, having reason- able success in the Southern ‘Soul Blues’ market through the 1990s. He is now recording for Charles Wilson’s Wilson label and is quite active.
