Peter Wagner
"Mistrust the screaming who often, when it comes down to it, produce only a moan." (Peter Wagner)
"Wagner works according to the butterfly recipe," wrote the 'Oberösterreichische Tagblatt' in 1981 about Peter Wagner, and: "Sophisticated texts without a wooden hammer, but with far more political background than is usual in the alternative scene of his generation, plus rhythmic and melodic catchy tunes that betray perfection, but above all amaze with their uncommonly simple means. If you grew up with Kreisler and Hüsch, learned to think with Degenhardt and Süverkrüp, and discovered your belly with an alarm clock to your brain, you probably won't be able to get past the 'songwriter' Wagner". Peter Wagner was born in 1956 in Wolfau, near the Lafnitz, the border river between Burgenland and Styria. Grown up in the bilingual communities of Unterwart and Oberwart, he has lived in southern Burgenland since 1982 after various excursions and has been a freelance author since 1975. He learned his writing skills from the radio play author Jan Rys, who first brought him to Unterrabnitz for the International Radio Play Days in 1974. As a result, around a dozen radio plays were produced and broadcast for ORF, ARD, Magyar Rádió and Radio Ljubljana. After a phase of musical attempts in connection with texts and actions (among others with Christoph Cech, Christian Mühlbacher, Wolfgang R. Kubizek) he turned from 1986 on primarily to writing plays, a little later also to staging. So far about 30 plays and 15 own productions have been created. The publication of Peter Wagner's debut album 'Mensch ...' received excellent reviews in Austria, but did not go beyond the status of an insider tip. So it was called in various media among other things: "His songs need neither a wooden hammer nor an idyll - but they make you feel sad. Wagner reacts sensitively to threats that affect every one of us; if something angers him, he pushes back. Man, I like that record because it's a new accent in songwriting. But if you like Schönsingerei, you'd better stick to various former choirboys."
