This collection of New Orleans songs is mainly from the early 1960s and mainly from Joe Banashak's Minit and Instant labels (founded in 1959 and 1961 respectively)
The recordings on this Rhino collection show a move away from the New Orleans sound of the 1950s towards smoother soul productions, often featuring horn sections that were simply not found in the earlier R&B style. Allen Toussaint, who dominates many of these recordings as producer, arranger, songwriter and pianist, was undoubtedly instrumental in the development of the New Orleans sound of the early 1960s.
