"The Descendants" has no orchestral score. Instead, director Alexander Payne decided to fill his film exclusively with music by Hawaiian artists - much of it from existing recordings. Most of it was created by acknowledged masters of the genre, including Gabby Pahinui (known as the "father of the modern slack-key guitar"), Ray Kane, Keola Beamer, Lena Machado and Rev. Dennis Kamakahi. The filmmakers tried to make a film with a distinctly Hawaiian flair, and the music was a crucial component. The soundtrack of "The Descendants" not only recalls the experience of watching the film, but also reveals to the listeners the soulful and emotional spectrum of Hawaiian music over the decades and serves as an eye-opening introduction to some of the greatest and most important artists of Hawaiian music.
