Since the early days of Ace Records, the feminine side of music has held a special place in the label's roster. A year has passed since the release of our last compilation, which focused on the US girl group sound of the 1960s—think castanets, melancholic teenage sirens, Svengali-like producers, and mini-sonatas about daydreams, dancing, and moody friends—and so it's now time for a new edition, released exclusively on vinyl.

As 1968 drew to a close, the golden age of girl groups seemed to be over: the Shangri-Las, Ronettes, and Chiffons, for example, hadn't had a notable hit since 1966. But then came “Condition Red,” a cleverly produced psychodrama performed by the Goodees, who grace the cover and dramatically open the first side of this new compilation. On the more soulful second side, Les Chansonettes open with “Don't Let Him Hurt You,” an elaborately produced smash hit written in the style of Martha & the Vandellas. As usual in this series, the inner sleeve contains an illustrated, 4,000-word track commentary by longtime compiler Mick Patrick.
