Franz Wilhelm Thon was born in Cologne on June 30, 1910. His father was a composer and so he came into contact with music at an early age. Initially, Franz Thon played in the 30s and 40s as a clarinetist and saxophonist in various well-known orchestras and recorded numerous successful records with them. In 1946 Franz Thon got a permanent position with the then radio dance orchestra of the NWDR in Hamburg. In 1948 he also took over

its direction.

With the NWDR Radio Dance Orchestra, Franz Thon accompanied, among others, the Peter Frankenfeld broadcast "1:0 für Sie" and the Hans Rosenthal broadcast "Wer fragt, gewinnt". With the spin-off of WDR, the orchestra now operated as the NDR Dance Orchestra under the direction of Franz Thon.

In 1956, Franz Thon founded the Tanzorchester ohne Namen (Dance Orchestra without a Name) at NDR, which was to stand for a more modern sound. Franz Thon participated in numerous radio and TV broadcasts. He led the NDR's entertainment orchestra until 1979.
