After years of visiting graveyards, combing haunted houses and following (heh heh) dead ends, we've finally tracked down the rights to the legendary Frankie Stein and His Ghouls series! Why did we risk life and limb and our livelihoods to find these records? Well, for starters, we Real Goners LOVE those '60s horror-rock comedies - think of our earlier macabre forays into the Zacherle, Munsters and Groovie Goolies series. But there's something very special about these Frankie Stein and His Ghouls records. You wouldn't think that Halloween records released by a subsidiary (Power Records) of a label specializing in children (Peter Pan Records) would be so...uh...spooky, but these records are definitely the most extraordinary of their kind. And there might be a reason for that... It turns out that the Power label has enlisted the help of some very, very interesting musicians for some of its projects. For example, the 1966 album Batman and Robin by The Sensational Guitars of Dan and Dale was produced by Tom Wilson, known for Bob Dylan, Velvet Underground and the Mothers of Invention among others - and the band consisted of free jazz legend Sun Ra and members of The Blues Project! This has led to all sorts of speculation as to who Frankie Stein and His Ghouls actually were; names that have been mentioned include guitarist Duane Eddy, jazz saxophonist Max Greger and, yes, Sun Ra and The Blues Project again. In any case, be prepared for frenetic rock-and-twist workouts punctuated by maniacal roars and shattering sound effects. And with a backstory like that, it's no wonder that original copies of these albums sell for downright horrendous prices... The album cover of Monster Sounds and Dance Music, the last album in the series, proves that nobody does the twist quite like a giant snake! This previously unreleased classic from 1965 offers “de-compositions” to dance to such as “Be Careful, It's My Throat” and “Saturday Evening Ghost”.
