The soul legend has recorded a sensational collection of songs that are strongly influenced by her gospel roots. The album was created over the course of several years. It is intended to be her final full-length album, so it was a labor of love and a family affair.

Her son Marcus produced, mixed, and mastered it. Her daughter Cassandra runs the label. Her son Marcel composed the bass line for “1963.” Her sister Maggie Peebles accompanied Stanton on two songs. British bandleader Ernie McKone recorded “Shine A Light” in London, which is only fitting given the Rolling Stones classic.

Mark Nevers, who has already produced several of Candi Stanton’s earlier Americana albums, put the finishing touches on some tracks. Guitar virtuoso Jonathan DuBose Jr. breathed new life into “I Missed The Target Again.” Blues legend Larry McCray added more verve to “Hang On In There.” William Bell was the perfect partner for “My God Has A Telephone.” Stanton’s voice has always been a powerful and soulful instrument, and on this album it sounded better than ever.

No wonder “Back To My Roots” was nominated for a 2026 Grammy for Best Gospel Album—her first nomination in 40 years. It’s time to go back to church.
