In the course of jazz history even the saxophone giants Johnny Hodges, Benny Cartr, Willie Smith and to some extent Pete Brouwn were surpassed by Tab Smith, whose recordings and many good solos are not always given due credit.  But rhythm and blues experts rate his band as one of the best of all time, along with those of Lucky Milliinder, Buddy Johnson, Tiny Bradshaw, Joe Morris and Todd Rhodes. The main job of these medium and large orchestras was to keep the dance hall full and support a never-ending stream of blues shouters and crooners on stage, screen, radio and record. Under these circumstances, Tab Smit also always provided full satisfaction.
