Shanana Shanana (LP, Cut-Out)

sealed 1971 US Cut-Out LP Stereo

Sha Na Na are closely associated with the revival of the classic American doo-wop and rock'n'roll sound of the 1950s. Their album Shanana was released in 1971 on Kama Sutra and combines well-known vocal-group classics with original material from the group. The first side opens with Yakety Yak, Jailhouse Rock, Duke Of Earl and Tell Laura I Love Her, immediately setting the tone with a lively selection of familiar songs. Blue Moon, I Wonder Why and Great Balls Of Fire continue the journey before Rock And Roll Is Here To Stay brings the first side to a close. Side two moves into the group's own material with Only One Song, Depression, Canadian Money, Top Forty, Ruin Me Blues and Just A Friend. With 14 tracks in total, Shanana captures the combination of vocal harmonies, doo-wop, rock'n'roll and youthful energy that became central to Sha Na Na's musical identity. The album is an appealing document of the early-1970s revival of classic vocal-group music, while the repertoire itself reaches directly back to the golden era of 1950s rock'n'roll. For collectors and listeners who love doo-wop harmonies, old-school rock'n'roll and the unmistakable Sha Na Na approach, Shanana offers plenty to discover.
