Neil Sedaka passed away on February 27, 2026, at the age of 86. With him, the music world loses one of the last great craftsmen of 20th-century popular music – a classically trained pianist, a precise composer, and a singer whose work shaped American pop for decades.

Sedaka was not a manufactured star. Educated at the Juilliard School in New York, he mastered harmony, structure, and discipline before stepping into the world of rock ’n’ roll. Together with his longtime collaborator Howard Greenfield, he became one of the defining writers of the Brill Building era, creating enduring hits such as Oh! Carol, Calendar Girl, Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen, and Breaking Up Is Hard To Do [Emery, Always Magic in the Air, Oxford University Press].

In 1962, Breaking Up Is Hard To Do reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1975, Sedaka achieved the rare feat of turning the same song—reimagined as a ballad—into another major hit [Whitburn, The Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits, Record Research].
