SCHICHT, Songgruppe of the TU Dresden

For a long time, Dresden was the second most important centre for the GDR song scene after Berlin. Already in 1966 a Hootenanny Club was founded at the Central Club of Youth and Athletes. In 1967 he joined the student club of the TU Dresden and was renamed in folklore group of the TU Dresden. In 1968 the group pasaremos was formed, in 1971 the song group of the TU Dresden (existed until 1978). The claim was now: 'GDR-konkret'. Idea conferences were held, research carried out in companies, documentary material included in the programmes and theatrical means tested. The highlight was the programme 'Begegnungen' (1974), from which the song Zugvögel originates.

A part of the song group wanted to continue the gained experiences professionally and founded the group Schicht in 1975, whose premiere was the Politrevue 'Made in GDR' in 1976. This was followed by concert programmes such as 'Lebenslieder' (1979) and musical theatre productions such as the apprentice musical 'P 16' (1978), from which the song Reiß mich ein originated. From 1980 to 1984 the group Schicht carried out the workshop 'Lieder und Theater' for young artists of different genres every year, "a nationwide intellectual 'Perestroika'-workshop in front of the Perestroika" (Klaus-Peter Schwarz). From 1976 to 1983 Schicht worked in the Kulturpalast Dresden, from 1983 to 1992 she maintained her own theatre in the Dresden suburb of Reick.

From 1967, the house author of the Dresden groups was the songwriter Bernd Rump (born 1947 in Dresden). He studied engineering economics at the Technical University of Dresden and worked in this profession until 1972, but then went into cultural work, to the Leipzig Literature Institute and finally from 1975 to 1990 as a playwright and dramaturge to the Schicht group. He also appeared as a soloist, organized singer-songwriter seminars and was chairman of the Central Advisory Group of the FDJ Singing Movement from 1979 to 1982. Since the end of 1989, Rump has been heavily involved in politics. He was temporarily a member of the party executive of the SED/PDS, received his doctorate on Peter Weiss' 'Aesthetics of Resistance' and is now active as a political co-worker of the PDS.

The most important composer of the Dresden groups was Jürgen Magister (born 1952 in Lauchhammer). From 1968 to 1970 he and his brothers Ulrich and Udo shaped the musical profile of the singing club Hoyerswerda. In 1970 he went to Dresden to study physics and joined the group pasaremos/Songgruppe of the TU Dresden. From 1972 he set texts by Bernd Rump to music. From 1975 to 1989 he was a composer, singer, musician and performer in the Schicht group, since then he has continued to work as a composer and is also active as a journalist.
