B.B. King 's nephew presents his appealing Americana-blues-roots mixture "Sinner-Songwriter". The legendary blues label releases the album of the Detroit-born artist who grew up musically in Chicago and now lives in Nashville.
It is the debut work of this interesting man who follows in his uncle's big footsteps without false restraint. Phillip-Michael Scales mixes the devotional, passionate formulas and sounds of the blues with storytelling techniques familiar from indie rock and singer-songwriter.
Scales was born with a fiercely independent streak and a passion for live performance. He played guitar in his own indie bands, wrote and recorded his own music. His uncle encouraged him to develop, and as Scales discovered the roots of the blues in his personal and private life, their relationship grew closer.
It was only after his uncle's death that Scales began to incorporate the blues more into his music. "These days I find a lot of my personal history in the blues.
It has led me to this point in my life. Politics, my identity and, of course, heritage inform my music." The result is a sound he calls "Dive Bar Soul", combining indie rock storytelling and the passion of the blues.
