Santana & Mahavishnu John McLaughlin: Love Devotion Surrender (LP, 180g Vinyl)

(Speakers Corner) 5 tracks, 180g vinyl gatefold cover

For some, "Love, Devotion, Surrender" is the record on which John McLaughlin exceptionally reaches into the piano keys and organist Jan Hammer serves the drums, for others it is Carlos Santana's most spiritual album. Even though both string disciples had the same guru show them the path to enlightenment at the same time, this album is inspired by the spirit of John Coltrane.

To convey their very different readings and playing styles of Trane's music, the bosses formed a project band from members of the Santana troupe and the Mahavishnu Orchestra. In the playing, Santana's distorted melodic rolls merge with McLaughlin's high-pressure staccato to create viscous drive in "Love Supreme." This approach works equally well in slow motion: fluid as well as inspired, the duo works their way through the miniature, slowly paced Coltrane composition "Naima" on acoustic guitars.

For the introspection of the partly spiritual, but not brooding sounds, Santana's signature sometimes zips through the arrangements with excited conga strumming and as vocals calling from afar. At the latest in the broad gospel epic "Let Us Got Into The House," followers of Santana's core albums will find their Carlos and his time-deprived solos. Thus, Love and Humility is not about preservation, but about devotion to oneself in its purest form.

Santana
