Santana: Caravanserai (LP, 180g Vinyl)

(Speakers Corner) 10 tracks, 180g vinyl gatefold cover.

To categorize the music of Carlos Santana into one genre is akin to dancing on a volcano for rock augurs. While the New York Times celebrated the band as a reincarnation of Dizzy Gillespie's epochal Cuban jazz big band of the late forties, the trade organ Rolling Stone wanted to have experienced a "methedrine rush without images". A very simple explanation for the origins of the differentiated sound images and the throbbing and chirping of Afro-Cuban polyrhythms was provided by organist Gregg Rolie, who succinctly remarked that each member of the multicultural band just "plays the music he grew up with."
How exciting this sounds is already shown by the opening piece, woven from natural sounds, twisted rhythms and small melody fragments, which fascinates like many other numbers even without the unique drive in Santana's lead sound. Of course, there is also plenty of solo material on guitar as exuberant improvisations to rock, salsa and jazz essences. Rightly, listening to this perfectly oiled rhythm machine, one gets the impression that the limits of what was possible were explored by this unique formation, which not coincidentally disintegrated a short time later. What remains is one of the strongest Santana records to be had.

Santana
