Landlocked - The Best Of Ronny & The Daytonas

BY 1961, a teenage sub-culture exploded on the Californian coastline... Surfing. The excitement and exhilaration of riding a wave was quickly matched by the fashion, movie and music industries.

Within months. Californian surf groups had established themselves on the national charts, prompting surf observer Gus Kuhns to write in '63. "The sport of surfing had gained national recognition through feature motion pictures and popular 'Surfing' tunes on all the nation's juke boxes. In some places the surfboard had replaced the hot rod as a teenage symbol. Youngsters across the nation wear 'Makaha' T shirts and tennis shoes and peroxide their hair in order to have that sundrenched surfer look while they gyrate to rock-and-roll tunes. All that the people who live in landlocked portions of the United States needed were waves - they had already become surfers at heart."

The Beach Boys helped even further by introducing a hot rod song as the B-side of their second surf hit. Suddenly, surf groups started to crop-up all over the U.S. and more surprisingly, in the 'landlocked' areas.... The Astronauts from Denver, The Trashmen from Minneapolis and from the heart of country music, Nashville, Tennessee, Ronny & The Daytonas. However, Tennessee is only a mere cruise away from Florida and the home of Daytona Beach and Daytona Speedway (hence their name).
