Matthias Reim * 26. November 1957 Wie bei vielen Popmusikern beginnt Matthias Reim in einer Schülerband. Nach der Reifeprüfung 1976 beginnt Matthias dem Wunsch des Vaters entsprechend, in Göttingen Germanistik und Anglistik zu studieren. Er plant, in die Fußstapfen seines Vaters zu treten und Studienrat zu werden. Neben dem Studium macht Matthias allerdings weiterhin Musik. Er komponiert in dieser Zeit für Künstler wie Roy Black und Jürgen Drews und produziert ein Album für Bernhard Brink. 1989 schreibt er schließlich einen Song, den er selbst singen möchte: "Verdammt, ich lieb' dich". Nach einigen Schwierigkeiten, eine Plattenfirma für sich zu finden, veröffentlicht Reim 1990 bei Polydor die – wie sich später herausstellt - erfolgreichste deutschsprachige Single der Dekade. "Verdammt, ich lieb' dich" führt über 16 Wochen die Charts an und wird mit Gold und Platin veredelt. Auch das schnell nachgeschossene Album ("Reim") ist überaus erfolgreich. Matthias Reim wird quasi über Nacht zu einem neuen Superstar im gerade wiedervereinigten Deutschland.
