Radio Caroline, Radio Veronica and Radio Nordsee International. A WDR documentary by Herbert Hoven and Hans Jacobshagen. In German. A great project with several original recordings and jingles. Entertaining fun for all oldie fans!
At the end of the sixties, when Germany still had music presenters hosting the programmes, the DJs of Radio Caroline, Radio Veronica, Radio London, Radio Mi Amigo and Nordsee International sat at the microphone playing the latest tracks from England and America non-stop – weeks before you could buy the singles on the mainland. The stations were installed on ships that cruised the North Sea beyond the three-mile limit.

Depending on the weather, the 'pirate stations' could be picked up as far south as the southern part of North Rhine-Westphalia. For many youngsters, the thrill lay in sitting in front of their portable radio, turning the aerial this way and that until the 'pirates' of the various ships came through on short or medium wave.
The DJs were heroes: John Peel, for instance, who later staged outstanding sessions at the BBC, or – as one of the few Germans on these ships – Ulf Posé.
Legends still surround the ships themselves today. Were they boarded by the British or Dutch coastguard? Were the supply helicopters intercepted by the navy? And how often did the vessels find themselves in distress at sea?
