A superstar lineup of indie artists ranging from Josh Ritter to the Drive-By Truckers have come together to pay homage to one of the great country/folk songwriters on a new tribute album. Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows: Songs of John Prine is, for the most part, a younger cast of admirers who have delved deeply into John Prine's songbook.

With these types of tribute records, it's often easy to tell whether or not the artists recruited to participate are truly fans of the honoree. On this compilation, the twelve artists select songs from nine different John Prine albums. The album includes some of his better known songs, such as "Angel From Montgomery" in the version of the Old Crow Medicine Show or "Spanish Pipedream" taken from the Avett Brothers, but a large part of the album also includes lesser known but equally deserving tracks. Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, in addition to an insightful written introduction on the cover of the current album, contributes a haunting version of Prine's "Bruised Orange (Chain Of Sorrow)" that serves as the album's opener.

Other standout contributions come from My Morning Jacket, who tackle "All The Best," and Those Darlins, an all-female cow-punk trio that reinvents "Let's Talk Dirty In Hawaiian." Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows: Songs Of John Prine appears on Prine's own record label, Oh Boy Records, which suggests that the man himself is okay with it (and that's never a bad thing). Ultimately, this new compilation is about celebrating these beautiful songs and ensuring that John Prine's work is enjoyed by a wider audience.

In Chicago freundete sich John Prine mit dem Folkie Steve Goodman an, der einen von Prines Songs bei einer Show in Anwesenheit von Kris Kristofferson spielte. Kristofferson und sein unwahrscheinlicher Freund, Paul Anka, besuchten Prine at the Earl in Chicago. "Der Club hatte geschlossen, aber die Tür war offen", sagte Prine. "Die Stühle standen auf den Tischen und ich wartete darauf, bezahlt zu werden." Als Kristofferson und Anka ankamen, zog Prine seine Gitarre aus dem Koffer und rannte ein paar Lieder herunter. Kristofferson lud Prine und Goodman ein, mit ihm in New York aufzutreten. Atlantic's Jerry Wexler war im Publikum. "Am nächsten Tag unterschrieb ich einen Plattenvertrag", sagte Prine. "Es war einfach so schnell." Anka wurde sein erster Manager.

Angel aus Montgomery war einer von dreizehn abwechslungsreichen, konsequenten und vor allem stimmungsvollen Songs auf Prines erstem Album. Es wurde von Bonnie Raitt, Susan Tedeschi und vielen anderen, meist Frauen, abgedeckt. Im Gespräch mit Paul Zollo sagte Prine, der Song sei fast ein Kuhfladen mit einem anderen Chicagoer Folkie, Eddie Holstein. Eines Nachmittags versuchten sie, gemeinsam ein Lied zu schreiben, und Eddie schlug ein Lied über eine ältere Person vor. Prine sagte, dass er das schon mit Hello In There gemacht hat. Dann sagte er: "Wie wäre es mit einem Lied über eine Frau mittleren Alters, die sich älter fühlt, als sie ist." Holstein lachte es aus, aber Prine blieb dabei. "Ich ging nach Hause. Ich hatte dieses wirklich lebendige Bild einer Frau, die mit Seife auf den Händen über dem Wasser stand und von allem wegging. Ich habe es aus dem Herzen dieser Person fließen lassen. Sie wollte nur, dass ein Engel kommt, um sie von all dem wegzubringen." Warum Montgomery? Weil jeder weiß, dass Hank Williams von dort kam. Später ausführend, sagte Prine, schreibt er gerne aus der Sicht von anderen Charakteren als sich selbst. Männliche Belletristiker erschaffen weibliche Charaktere, so dass Songwriter die gleiche Freiheit haben sollten. "Es gibt kein Geschlecht, wenn es darum geht, Schriftsteller zu sein", sagte er.
