Gene Pitney was the musician among musicians. Having begun his career as a songwriter, he was not content to be just the faceless pen behind the success of his colleagues, but became a singing star himself.

He did this at a time when America was being swept by a wave of British talent, led by The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. Pitney turned the tables and became successful in the United Kingdom a 45-year career. 1962 was Pitney's breakthrough year in the US. He shot to No. 4 in April with the hit (The Man Who Shot) Liberty Valance, written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, which was intended as the theme song for the John Wayne film of the same name. It was followed by his best-selling US single, Only Love Can Break A Heart.

The song was covered by numerous artists, with Dionne Warwick attempting her own version in the late seventies. He left behind a career that lasted four decades, during which he recorded 16 Top 40 singles in the United States and 22 in the United Kingdom. His legacy is also evident in the hits of the likes of Orbison, Bobby Vee and Ricky Nelson. This collection showcases the best of Pitney's and gives insight into one of America's most gifted musicians, a man who found his own voice.
