On his second album, Pinnell is comfortable in his own skin and achieves the redemption that was only hinted at in his previous songs. Hailed as "stunningly good" (Greg Vandy, KEXP) and a "tutorial in classic country music" (Popmatters), Pinnell's debut immediately stood out for its authenticity and unflinching nature.

If OH/KY was the confident entry of an unconventional new talent, his 2017 album Ties of Blood and Affection represents a deft lateral move. Rather than duplicating the hard-hitting themes and values of his debut, Pinnell finds comfort in his own skin on this second album, achieving the redemption only hinted at in his previous, tortured songs. Here, Pinnell joyfully embraces work life, family obligations and faith. His new stories are about acceptance and survival, while also grappling with his most difficult chapter yet: adulthood.

"If life don't get any better / I'm alright with this" may not be a true triumph, but it's an honest revelation. Musically, too, Ties of Blood and Affection is a comfortable and confident work. Pinnell's songs are infused with honest and classic elements; buoyed by his steady acoustic guitar, the tunes chug along in a springtime dream from the period between, say, 1955 and 1975 - unearthing a sweet secret stash of songs that "Waylon Jennings might have written if he'd made a record with Alex Chilton" (Portland Tribune).

The rhythm section, all snap and shuffle, finds its purpose in well-trodden paths. The pedal steel and Telecaster stinger come in at just the right time, winking at JP's worldly-wise couplets. Here the smooth organ inserts gospel into the conversation. You can feel the room breathing, and get a sense of the musicians looking each other in the eye as their performances are recorded directly to a thick analog tape. And through it all comes that oaky identity, the devastating heart of his work. Jeremy's honest and wounded voice can sound ironic, jubilant, and debauched - all in a single line.
