Die 4 Schulfreunde Syd Barrett (6.1.1946 Cambridge, Gitarre), Nick Mason (27.1. 1945 Birmingham, Drums), Roger Waters (6.4.1944, Great Bookham, Baß, Vocals) und Rick Wright (28. 7.1945, Keyboards) schlossen sich 1965 zu einer Combo zusammen und waren die erste Gruppe der Welt, die die Möglichkeit der modernen Elektronik für die Popmusik ent-deckte und ausnutzte.

Mit ihrer zweiten LP „A saucerful of secrets" eroberten sie schlagartig ein internationales Publikum, das sie unfreiwillig zu den Päpsten der gerade anlaufenden Drogen- und Psyche-delic-Welle erhob.

Mit tonnenschwerer, hochkomplizierter Elektronik und einem ausgeklügelten Beleuchtungssystem schufen sie ein völlig neues Konzert-erlebnis, das im totalen Raumklang (mit-tels im ganzen Konzertsaal verteilter Laut-sPrecher) gipfelte. Bis heute besteht die Formation - abgesehen vom Austritt Bar-rets, der von David Gilmore 1968 ersetzt wurde - in ihrer ursprünglichen Besetzung.

Pink Floyd gehören zu den wenigen Gruppen der neueren Zeit, die es sich leisten können, monate-, ja jahrelange Pausen zwischen ihre LP-Produktionen zu legen, ohne von ihrem Publikum ver-gessen zu werden. Ihre mittlerweile sehr selten gewordenen Live-Auftritte sind stets auch bei nur spärlicher Promotion ausverkauft. Nach einigen Klassik-Eska-paden, die zwar große kommerzielle Er-folge wurden, von der Kritik aber ver-rissen wurden, kehrten Pink Floyd mit ihrer neuesten LP „Wish you were here" wieder zum Stil ihrer früheren Produk-tionen zurück.
