Nana Mouskouri kam 1936 in Athen zur Welt, wo ihr Vater in der Filmbranche tätig war. Sie genoß - nach dem Kriege wenigstens - eine problemlose, ruhige und bürgerliche Jugend: Grundschule, Gymnasium, Ausbildung im Conservatoire Hellénique, wo sie 8 Jahre lang Gesang, Klavier und Harmonielehre studierte.

1958 sang Nana Mouskouri zum ersten Mal im Rundfunk, aber da sie keine klassischen Lieder, sondern etwas „Modernes“ interpretiert hatte, wurde sie gebeten, sofort die Musikhochschule zu verlassen Hadjidakis - Komponist der Filmmusik „Sonntags nie' - hatte sie aber gehört und war von ihrer klaren, geschulten Stimme so begeistert, daß er für sie Chansons komponierte. Damit siegte sie dann 1959 und 1960 beim „Festival de la Chanson Hel|énique' und wurde dabei vom internationalen Show-Geschäft entdeckt. Mit ihren „Weißen Rosen aus Athen' eroberte sie zuerst das deutsche Publikum (1200 000 verkaufte Platten), dann das amerikanische. In den Staaten machte sie 4 lange Tourneen mit Harry Belafonte.

Danach kam sie als gefeierter Star zurück nach Europa, wo sie nun seit 10 Jahren zu den beliebtesten Sängerinnen gehört. Ihr französisches Repertoire unterscheidet sich heute wesentlich von den übrigen Liedern, die sie in allen möglichen Sprachen singt.
