CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - In Winston-Salem, N.C., guitarist Sam Moss is a legend. A towering, highly versatile musician whose commitment to the blues and mastery of the nuances of electric blues soloing was roughly comparable to that of Mike Bloomfield in Chicago, Moss was an inspiring, charismatic mentor to generations of North Carolina rockers, including Let's Active and The dB's.

He was a larger-than-life personality who amazed local audiences with his club performances, but he never released a record during his lifetime. That's why producer Chris Stamey was thrilled when he discovered 2020 forgotten masters of Blues Approved at the end of an old tape, a spectacular Stax and Muscle Shoals-influenced solo record he recorded with Mitch Easter in 1977.
