Sein Markenzeichen war und ist „The Silver Sound of Glenn Miller", der besondere Sound, an dem man sein Orchester einwandfrei erkennen kann: Viel weich gespielte Blechinstrumente mit der Besonderheit, daß die 4 Saxophone der Big-Band-Besetzung von einer Klarinette angeführt werden. Nach dieser Soundneuerung erreichte Glenn Miller ab 1939 große Popularität.

Geboren wurde er am 1.3.1904 in Clarinda - Iowa. Er studierte Musik an der University Of Colorado- sein Hauptinstrument war die Posaune. Er spielte in verschiedenen Gruppen und gehörte Anfang der 30er Jahre zu den gefragtesten Studiomusikern und Arrangeuren. 1934 war er bei den Dorsey-Brothers, 1935 im Orchester von Paul Noble. 1937 gründete er seine eigene Big Band, mit der er ab 1939 9f0ßen Erfolg hatte. 1942 wurde die Band aufgelöst,weilMiller Zum Militär eingezogen wurde. Dort gründete er mit musikbegeisterten Soldaten das „Army Air Force Orchestra', mit dem er ab 1944 unter dem Namen „The American Band Of The Allied Expeditionary Forces' in Sachen Truppenbetreuung für die alliierten Streitkräfte in ganz Europa unterwegs war.

Als Glenn Miller nach einem Konzert in London zu dem nächsten in Paris am 16.12.1944 fliegen wollte, kam er dort nicht an- die Maschine war offensichtlich abgestürzt, obwohl niemals Anzeichen dafür gefunden wurden. Nach seinem Tode wurde die Band bis 1945 von Ray McKinley und Jerry Gray weitergeführt. Zu den bekanntesten Titeln, die Glenn Miller hinterlassen hat, gehören „ln The Mood', „At Last', „Moonlight Serenade', „Sunrise Serenade', „Little Brown Jug', „Tuxedo Junction' und „American Patrol'.
