One of the greatest hitmakers of the postwar R&B era, Amos Milburn wrote and recorded uproarious odes to sex, booze and all-night partying. It was rock 'n' roll in all but name. Amos Milburn rocked the house for the Los Angeles-based Aladdin label right from the beginning. At his debut session in 1946, Amos Milburn waxed a piledriving Down The Road Apiece, and Amos Milburn kept the late '40s R&B hit parade jumping with Chicken Shack Boogie, Roomin' House Boogie and Sax Shack Boogie.

They're all here on 'Amos Rocks,' along with his odes to the bottle, like Bad, Bad Whiskey, Let Me Go Home Whiskey, and One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer. Plus, there's Amos Milburn' torrid '56 remake of Chicken Shack Boogie cut in New Orleans with Lee Allen on sax and Earl Palmer driving the drumbeat. Als einer der Pioniere des hausrockenden Jump-Blues sang der Boogiepiano-Könner Amos Milburn über Sex, Partys und Alkohol. Mit Letzterem wurde er so untrennbar verbunden, dass Komponisten ihre besten Sauflieder umgehend Amos gaben, was nicht ohne Auswirkungen blieb.

"Das war sein ganzes Repertoire, das Trinken", sagte sein längjähriger Freund und Aladdin-Labelkollege Charles Brown. "Denn er trank genauso wie er sang."

Amos stammte aus Houston, wo er am 1. April 1927 geboren wurde, und begann schon als Fünfjähriger mit dem Hämmern auf die Klaviertasten. Die Boogie-Könige Albert Ammons, Meade Lux Lewis und Pete Johnson gehörten zu seinen Idolen. Nach seinem Militäreinsatz im Zweiten Weltkrieg im Pazifik kehrte Milburn nach Houston zurück, wo er regional auftrat. Die Künstlervermittlerin Lola Anne Cullum sah ihn live in San Antonio und wurde sein Manager; sie brachte ihn zuerst nach L.A., um ihre neue Entdeckung vorzustellen. Modern lehnte ab, aber die hartnäckige Cullum brachte einen Plattenspieler bis ans Krankenhausbett von Eddie Mesner, um ihm Amos' Demostücke vorzuspielen, und er nahm seine erste Session für Aladdin im September 1946 auf (u. a. eine treibende Version von Down The Road Apiece).

Für Milburn ging es 1948 richtig nach oben, als er mit Chicken Shack Boogie und dem sanften Bewildered die Spitze der R&B-Charts erreichte, ebenso wie im Jahr drauf mit Roomin' House Boogie. 1950 wurde Bad, Bad Whiskey sein erster Alkohol-Spitzenreiter, gefolgt von den Hits Thinking And Drinking 1952 sowie Let Me Go Home Whiskey und dem typisch humorvollen Nr.-3-Hit One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer 1953. Aufgenommen im selben Jahr am 30. Juni mit seinen Aladdin Chickenshackers (eine New Yorker Studiogruppe mit dem Gitarristen Mickey Baker und den Saxspielern Noble Watts und Paul Williams), stammte der Titel aus der Feder des Songschmieds Rudolph Toombs aus New York, zu dessen erfolgreichen Schnaps-Oden auch One Mint Julep von den Clovers gehörte. John Lee Hooker änderte die Reihenfolge von Bourbon und Scotch und machte sich den Song 1966 im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes zu Eigen.

Amos blieb während der Rock'n'Roll-Welle im Chicken Shack zurück. Er und Brown fanden 1959 ihren Weg zu Ace Records und nahmen ein trauriges Duett unter dem Titel I Wanna Go Home auf, ein Vorläufer von Sam Cookes Bring It On HomeTo Me. Platten für King und Motown in den frühen 60er-Jahren konnten Amos' schwindenden Erfolg nicht aufhalten. Die Jahre des unsteten Lebens holten ihn ein, ein paar Schlaganfälle beendeten seine donnernden Boogies. 1979 wurde sein linkes Bein amputiert. Milburn verstarb am 3. Januar 1980, mit 52 war er ein alter Mann.
