Augie Meyers (1940–2026)
Augie Meyers (1940–2026)
A Voice of the Texas Sound
With the passing of Augie Meyers, the world of American roots music has lost one of its most distinctive voices. The San Antonio native, who died in March 2026 at the age of 85, helped shape the sound of Texas music for more than six decades.
Best known as the keyboard player and co-founder of the Sir Douglas Quintet, Meyers created one of the most recognizable sounds in rock and Tex-Mex music: the swirling tone of his Vox Continental organ. That unmistakable sound powered classics such as She’s About A Mover and Mendocino, records that brought the spirit of South Texas to international audiences in the 1960s.
Yet Meyers’ musical reach extended far beyond those hits. Together with his lifelong friend Doug Sahm, he helped forge a style that blended rock ’n’ roll, rhythm & blues, country, and the rich Mexican-American musical traditions of Texas. The result was a border-crossing sound that felt both timeless and completely original.
In later decades Meyers continued to celebrate that musical heritage as a member of the Texas Tornados, alongside Sahm, Flaco Jiménez, and Freddy Fender. The group carried Tex-Mex music to new generations and new audiences around the world. Meyers also remained an active recording artist and a sought-after studio musician, appearing on sessions for artists across the spectrum of American roots music.
Throughout it all, Augie Meyers remained deeply connected to the musical culture of his hometown. His playing carried the spirit of San Antonio’s dance halls, cantinas, and border-town rhythms into the wider world.
Augie Meyers was more than a keyboard player – he was a defining architect of the Texas Sound. His organ riffs, instantly recognizable and full of life, will continue to resonate wherever the music of the American Southwest is played.
