The final LP by Manfred Mann’s legendary original lineup, Pretty Flamingo is one of their most accomplished and adventurous efforts. Featuring the beguiling title hit plus covers of Ray Charles’ “Let’s Go Get Stoned” and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ “I Put A Spell On You,” it embodies the mix of catchy pop songcraft, bluesy R&B punch and left-field experimentation that’s made Manfred Mann one of their era’s most beloved bands. Although many of the British Invasion’s most prominent bands were comprised of inexperienced rockers learning their craft as they went along, Manfred Mann was something different. The versatile British quintet, which took its collective name from that of its South African-born keyboardist, was comprised of four seasoned musicians with a solid grounding in jazz and blues, plus a charismatic frontman who was also one of England’s finest blue-eyed soul singers.

Die Animals standen mit ihrer Liebe zum amerikanischen Blues und anderen schwarzen Musikformen nicht allein da. Obwohl der Brille tragende Keyboarder Manfred Mann ein Jazz-Liebhaber war, brachte die britische Band unter seinem Namen (was nicht seine Idee war) jede Menge Blueseinflüsse mit, auch wenn ihr lautes, ungehobeltes Cover von Do Wah Diddy Diddy der Exciters, das 1964 die Hitliste anführte, eher durch Pop und Soul als durch traditionellen Blues geprägt war.

Manfred Mann wurde am 21. Oktober 1940 in Johannesburg, Südafrika, als Manfred Lubowitz geboren, emigrierte 1961 nach Großbritannien und formierte im Jahr darauf mit dem Schlagzeuger Mike Hugg die jazzorientierten Mann-Hugg Blues Brothers. Ihr stilistischer Wendepunkt kam, als sie den Leadsänger - Bluesharpspieler und engagierten Blues-Fan Paul Jones (geb. am 24. Februar 1944) anheuerten, nachdem sich dessen Roosters getrennt hatten. Mit dem Bassisten Dave Richmond (der bald durch den Ex-Rooster Tom McGuinness ersetzt wurde) und dem Gitarristen - Saxofonisten Mike Vickers wurden sie 1963 zu Manfred Mann, kurz bevor sie ihre britische Debütsingle auf HMV veröffentlichten, das instrumentale Why Should We Not. Die Gruppe begann auf sich aufmerksam zu machen, als sie 1964 5-4-3-2-1 veröffentlichten, die Titelmelodie der BBC-Musikshow 'Ready, Steady, Go' (die Single erschien in den USA auf dem Jazzlabel Prestige).

Nachdem Hubble Bubble (Toil And Trouble) sang- und klanglos unterging, machte Do Wah Diddy Diddy die Manfreds von heute auf morgen auf beiden Seiten des großen Teichs zu Rockstars (Jones' gutes Aussehen half sicher auch dabei). Aber der Inhalt ihrer ersten LP von 1964, die in etwas veränderter Form als 'The Five Faces Of Manfred Mann' auf der britischen HMV und als 'The Manfred Mann Album' in den USA auf dem United-Artists-Unterlabel Ascot erschien, machte klar, wo die musikalischen Interessen des intellektuell wirkenden Mann und seiner Kollegen lagen: Sie coverten altes Material von Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Chuck Berry und Bo Diddley. Bring It To Jerome, die Diddley-Nummer, die das Quintett auswählte (Bo hatte das Original im Juli 1955 für Checker eingespielt- Autor, Namensgeber und Hauptfigur Jerome Green war Bos Maracas-Perkussionist), wurde temperamentvoll interpretiert, mit Manfred Mann's kraftvollem Klavierspiel und Jones' starker Mundharmonika und scharfkantigem Gesang im Vordergrund. Die Hits gingen für Manfred Mann weiter: ein 64er-Cover on Sha La La der Shirelles, 1965 gefolgt von Come Tomorrow (und in England eine Version von Maxine Browns Oh No Not My Baby sowie If You Gotta Go Go Now).

Nachdem Vickers durch den zukünftigen Mitgründer von Cream, Jack Bruce, ersetzt wurde, war Pretty Flamingo 1966 ein Hit in Amerika und ein Charttopper in England. Als Jones die Band verlassen hatte (sein Ersatz war Mike D'Abo) und die Manfreds in Großbritannien zu Fontana und in den USA zu Mercury gewechselt waren, hatten sie nur noch wenig mit Blues zu tun.
