Bill Loose: Russ Meyer's Cherry...& Harry & Raquel ...ménage à trois! - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (LP, 45rpm, Colored Vinyl)
(Real Gone Music) 11 tracks, colored vinyl pressing white with black swirl.
A western mixed with softcore sex scenes and a Reefer Madness-style warning about the dangers of marijuana - it's all there in Cherry'& Harry & Raquel, one of Russ Meyer's wackiest films. But composer William 'Bill' Loose is up to the task of bridging some yawning gaps in style and plot. Loose is one of those cult composers whose work has been heard of far more than the man himself. During World War II, he conducted the U.S. Army Air Forces Orchestra in New York, and then was hired in the mid-1950s to be in charge of Capitol's extensive musical cue library (at one point, two dozen television shows used his cues)! From then on, he composed themes for shows like The Hollywood Squares and was musical director of The Doris Day Show. Beginning in the late '60s, however, Loose's career took a sharp left turn when he composed soundtracks for some of the most notorious B-movies of all time, including the outlaw biker movie The Rebel Rousers and Jack Hill's The Swinging Cheerleaders. But what gives his career true cult status is undoubtedly his work for sexploitation director Russ Meyer; Loose composed the soundtracks for many of Meyer's films, but unfortunately Cherry'& Harry & Raquel is one of only two released on LP. That's a shame, because it's a rollicking mix of rock 'n' roll, absurdist program music, bump-and-grind jazz, and old-fashioned, string-heavy widescreen vistas, courtesy of soundtrack composer Stu Phillips, whose fantastic garage-pop tune "Toys of Our Time" (performed by "The Jacks & Balls") appears twice, once in mono, once in stereo. Pressed in white vinyl with black swirl and mastered at 45 R.P.M. for maximum listening pleasure!
