Obwohl nur einen Zentimeter über fünf Fuß groß, war Shorty Longs Talent alles andere als winzig. Geboren Frederick Earl Long in Birmingham, Alabama (ein Staat, der mehr als seinen Anteil der Koryphäen zu Motowns Dienstplan) am 20. Mai 1940, Long wurde von Johnny Ace und Little Willie John beeinflusst und klimperte die 88er in lokalen Nachtlokalen, bevor er 1959 nach Detroit zog. Bei Harvey Fuqua und Gwen Gordys Tri-Phi Label in'62 unterschrieb er drei Singles. I'll Be There zierte zwei von ihnen, wobei Bad Willie den ersten Flip besetzte und Too Smart den zweiten. Die Firma drückte ein drittes Long 45 Paar Going Away und das rockige What's The Matter bevor Motown Tri-Phi, das Schwesterlabel Harvey, und seine vielversprechendsten Künstler aufnahm: saxman Jr. Walker & The All Stars, Johnny Bristol, The Spinners und Long.

Ebullient Shorty war sofort ein Favorit in Hitsville. "Das war mein Mann!" ruft der ehemalige Motown-Promo-Mann Weldon A. McDougal III, der Long oft auf der Straße begleitete. "Er hat immer gesungen und gespielt. Als wir ins Hotel gingen, werde ich es nie vergessen, fragte er sie, ob sie ein Klavier dabei haben. Und wenn sie es täten, wenn ich ihn jemals wieder sehen wollte, würde er da oben spielen, schreiben und Songs machen."

Obwohl er frisch in den Hallen war, wurde Long ermutigt, sein eigenes Material in Motown zu schreiben. Er schrieb Devil With The Blue Dress, sein erstes Angebot auf der brandneuen Soul-Tochter, mit Produzent Mickey Stevenson. Ein harter Blues-Grinder, gewürzt mit kräuselndem Piano und stechender Gitarre, vermied es irgendwie die'Billboard'-Charts. Aber Mitch Ryder wusste, dass es ein potenzieller Hit war. Der blauäugige Soul-Rocker und seine Detroit Wheels verdoppelten das Tempo, verschweißten es mit Little Richards glühender Good Golly Miss Molly und nagelten einen #4 Pop-Smash mit dem Hybrid auf dem New Voice Logo des Produzenten Bob Crewe in'66.

Shorty sprang 1966 mit einem ansteckenden Tanztraining, Function At The Junction, in die Charts. Er hatte mehr Erfolg in'68 mit Night Fo' Last, was so etwas wie eine Fortsetzung war. Aber Longs Bestseller kam später in diesem Jahr mit der rauen Neuheit Here Comes The Judge, inspiriert von einer verrückten Gerichtskomödie in der Fernsehsendung'Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In'. Langer tragischerweise ertrank der 29. Juni 1969 beim Fischen auf dem Detroit River; sein Ruderboot kenterte, als ein größeres Schiff es überflutete.
