Jimmy Liggins & His Drops Of Joy: Knocking You Out - A Singles Collection 1947-1959 (CD)
(2016/Jasmine) 30 Tracks - Joe Liggins' guitarist brother, Jimmy had just a handful of hits compared to his more distinguished brother whose career highlights can be heard on Jasmine CD JASMCD3064. Jimmy's raw R&B sound was distinctly different to the smooth almost urbane sounds of his elder brother but both of the brothers have key recordings that give them equal stature amongst influential R&B performers of the 1940s and 50s. Jimmy's discs present a sound which is actually far closer to the spirit of rock and roll than many of the discs cited as being influences on the rock and roll explosion. Features his classic drinking songs, 'Drunk' and 'I Ain't Drunk' plus many more great tracks. This collection is an absolute must for all blues and R&B fans.

Born in Oklahama on July 9, 1916, pianist Joe Liggins began recording for Exclusive in Los Angeles in 1945 with mellow 'city blues' material. His reputation grew quickly, encouraging brother Jimmy to forsake a boxing career and lead his own band, on guitar, for Specialty. Joe's rolling boogie `Honeydripper' proved popular, and he joined his brother at Specialty in 1950 where he had an immediate million seller 'Pink Champagne'.
Jimmy and his Drops of Joy recorded until 1955, latterly on Aladdin and Duplex, while Joe and his Honeydrippers remained with Specialty until 1959 before moving to Mercury, and in 1974 recorded for Johnny Otis' Blues Spectrum label.
