Johnny Lee wurde in seiner Jugend musikalisch von Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley und Chuck Berry beeinflusst. Später lernte er Mickey Gilley kennen und wurde Mitglied in dessen Band. Ab Anfang der 70er Jahre versuchte er immer wieder bei diversen Schallplattenfirmen eine Solokarriere zu starten, ohne ganz große Erfolge und ohne die Band von Gilley zu verlassen. Erst mit dem Film ,Urban Cowboy“ kam seine große Chance. Er sang als Solist ,Lookin' For Love“, ein Song, der auf der Soundtrack-L.P. zu finden war und der innerhalb kurzer Zeit die Spitze der Country Charts erreichte. Johnny Lee wurde so etwas wie ein Superstar mit ein paar No. 1-Follow-Ups. Inzwischen muss er sich allerdings wieder mit kleineren Charterfolgen begnügen. Johnny Lee war einige Jahre mit der Schauspielerin Charlene Tilton, bekannt aus der Dallas-Serie, verheiratet.
