Lee Kontiz: Lee Konitz With Warne Marsh (LP, 180g Vinyl)

(Speakers Corner) 8 tracks, 180g Vinyl

Lee Konitz (as); Warne Marsh (ts); Ronnie Ball, Sal Mosca (p); Billy Bauer (g); Oscar Pettiford (b); Kenny Clarke (dr)

What a rhythm section! A dream come true: Oscar Pettiford and Kenny Clarke - plus Billy Bauer on guitar and alternately Ronnie Ball (GB) or Sal Mosca (USA) on piano. No wonder that the improvisation artists from the Tristano school had a blast.

In the Atlantic studio in June 1955, standards were the starting point for the long, mature improvisation chains of Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh, at that time still students of the great guru from Chicago. Even if the titles are marked as original compositions, like "Background Music" or "Ronnie's Line", they are nothing else than adaptations of "All Of Me" or "That Old Feeling" - but on the very highest level. Lee Konitz always calls this 'The 12th step'. The repertoire is enriched by a rarely heard composition by the great Oscar Pettiford.

Time-keeping' - an almost untranslatable word creation of jazz musicians - is the most important element between "Donna Lee" and "There Will Never Be Another You" - and for this there is probably no more suitable drummer than Kenny 'Klook' Clarke, at that time still living in the USA, before Paris of the 50-70s became his adopted country without racial discrimination.

Sure - you can also buy the recordings on various digital sound carriers. But what is that against a rich black disc and a cover with the liner-notes of the famous Barry Ulanov.

By the way: One of the musicians is still on-the-road. Lee Konitz can often be heard and seen somewhere with someone in Europe. Even at almost 91 years of age.

This Speakers Corner production was made using analog master tape and mastering 100% pure analog. All licenses and GEMA fees have been paid. Recorded: June 1955 at Coastal Studio, New York City, by Tom Dowd in mono Production: Nesuhi Ertegun
