DIETRICH KITTNER

"Laughter, thoughtfulness and horror in a threesome" (Dietrich Kittner)

The 'Lüdenscheider Nachrichten' certify Dietrich Kittner to be "biting, argumentative and certainly not adapted" even after more than 40 years of cabaret, on the contrary, he is "full throttle on the left lane past the exit 'Neue Mitte'. The role of the Republic's permanent admonisher, provocateur and personified bad conscience fills Kittner with proper wit and inventiveness." Born in 1935, Kittner founded the Göttingen student and dilettante cabaret 'Die Leid-Artikler' in 1960. One year later he registered his cabaret as "Gewerbebetrieb für politische Satire" (!) at the Ordnungsamt der Landeshauptstadt Hannover. Since those early days, he has been responsible for almost 30 programs. With sketches, chansons, parodies and ballads as well as pamphlets and moritates, he mixes a cocktail in each of them, which deals with the sale of moral responsibility of dignitaries, the ideology of beautiful appearance and the power of notes in the "bank's own state". "Here no disguised social democrat sings, speaks and plays who is happy to share 'government responsibility', no, here no liberal pluralist speaks who wants to please everyone ... no, here sings and plays a man who has done an analysis of his own situation before working with the guitar", it was said in 1972 in 'Sing In'. The Hanoverian with temporary residence in Austria is therefore often to be found at focal points of political opinion forming: at the manifestations of the peace movement as well as in the parliament of Lower Saxony or at anti-fascism and anti-racism demonstrations.

Although Dietrich Kittner is often honoured - among others with the cabaret prize of the German Cabaret Prize 1984 - he has hardly been present in public media for more than 35 years. Colleague Dieter Hildebrandt rightly called this a "devastating state" and a "scandal". Kittner himself sees it - in the meantime - more calmly: "I don't always have to haggle over every formulation. Why should I express a different opinion than my own?"

For Dietrich Kittner, the song of two different consciences was a real premiere: "My first song to the guitar. I had been doing political cabaret - initially with ensemble - for a few years, but until then I had believed that I could only perform my ballads and benches on stage accompanied by a trio or pianist. Because of the art claim! Then, around 1966, a new, world-shattering realization had matured for me: Try to bring over the ramp what you usually give to the second best with a guitar only among friends. The term 'singer-songwriter' was hardly known in Germany back then. When he later became a citizen, he was initially exclusively left-wing and thus politically occupied.
The Frankfurt trial described in my song really happened - even the names of the perpetrators are authentic. I had just hung up my law studies because the contradiction between jurisprudence and justice had become clear to me - late but still. The judicial scandal of the acquittal of mass murderers, which was rather marginally noted in the public, confirmed me. The conclusion of the close connection between business and fascism became influential for many of my texts afterwards. I sing the 'Song of the Two Consciences' again and again today. Unfortunately, there are enough current occasions. So recent this one: The protective coating for the Berlin Holocaust Memorial was created by Degussa. Against payment, of course. A stroke of luck: more than 60 years ago, the same company supplied Zyklon B to Auschwitz via a subsidiary. Also against payment, of course. In sober terms, then, today's business is a follow-up order to what it was then. That's the way of the economy."
