Doug Kershaw, also known as “Ragin' Cajun”, is a unique entertainer whose name has become synonymous with the Cajun sound.
The albums “Mama Kershaw's Boy” and “Alive & Pickin'” are being released on CD for the first time.
These are his four albums that were in the Billboard charts from 1974 to 1977.
Douglas James Kershaw was born on January 24, 1936 in Tiel Ridge, a small community in the interior of the Gulf of Mexico west of New Orleans. Kershaw spoke Louisiana French before learning English at the age of 8, and also mastered the violin as taught to him by his mother Mama Rita.
“Alive & Pickin” from 1975 was recorded live at the Great South East Music Hall in Atlanta, Georgia. In addition to Kershaw's own songs such as 'Louisiana Man', the program also includes several classic country tunes, including 'Uncle Pen' and 'Battle of New Orleans'.
Doug Kershaw's career took off when he appeared with Bob Dylan on Johnny Cash's high-profile television show in 1969. He received further recognition and attention when he performed at the 1969 Newport Folk Festival alongside Joni Mitchell , Arlo Guthrie, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Don McLean and Jerry Jeff Walker. His appearances quickly led him to major concert promoters and the year ended with a prestigious highlight: a long engagement at New York's Filmore East as support act for Derek And The Dominoes (with Eric Clapton).
In 2009, he was inducted into the Louisiana Hall of Fame. Kershaw is still active at the age of 88.

Record Labels: Hickory, MGM, Mercury, RCA, Warner Brothers, Bear Family Erster Hit: Hey, Sheriff (1958) Erster Top Ten Hit: Louisiana Man (1961) Der Cajun Fiddler und Sänger Douglas James Kershaw begann seine Karriere Anfang der 50er Jahre zusammen mit seinen Brüdern Russell Lee „Rusty“ und Nelson „Pee Wee“ als „The Continental Playboys“ bei der Radio Station KPLC in Lake Charles. Die ersten Hitparadenerfolge kamen zusammen mit Bruder Rusty (geb. 2. 2. 1940) als ,Rusty And Doug“. Die beiden wurden Mitglieder beim Louisiana Hayride und später auch bei der Grand Ole Opry. Als Rusty Alkoholprobleme bekam, machte sich Doug Kershaw selbständig, hatte auch bei Warner Brothers einigen Erfolg, doch konnte er als Solist nie ganz an die Popularität des Duos anknüpfen.
